When you need to get a prescription for contact lenses, glasses, or eye drops, or you need laser surgery to correct vision problems, you should contact an optometrist. When you contact the optometrist ask them how long they have been providing their optometric services. Optometry doctors who have been optometrists for several years should have enough experience to test your vision and determine what kind of correction prescription you need. It is becoming more common for optometric physicians to also offer corrective laser eye surgery that actually changes the shape of your eye so that you will be able to see better. Ask the doctors if they can provide the health exams, therapy, and services that you need. While it is important that you list to your optometrist about the short sided, long sided, contacts, and surgery advice that he gives you, you should also be sure that you are getting the services that you need to keep your eyes healthy. For instance, if you have probably with dry eyes, then ask the doctor if he or she can prescribe drops that will moisturize your eyes and reduce redness. While you should always try to find an optometry doctor that can offer you the best services for your problems, you should also think about the prices that they charge. Ask the doctors how much they charge for their eye exams and the other services that they provide. After you have talked to several doctors you should be able to tell which ones have reasonable prices.

An optician is a person who reads prescriptions for visual correction, orders lenses, and dispenses eyeglasses and contact lenses. The term is most often used to refer to the profession of providing eyeglass lenses from refraction prescriptions supplied by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. Many people confuse the roles of these three types of eye care practitioners. Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine which deals with the diseases of the eye and their treatment; Optometry is the health care profession concerned with examination, diagnosis, and treatment of the eyes and related structures, and with determination and correction of vision problems using lenses and other optical aids. The Optician is the practitioner who will fill the prescriptions written by the other two types of eye care practitioners.
